Volkswagen recently announced that production of the third-generation Beetle will end in July 2019. The original Beetle was introduced to the public nearly 70 years ago; in 1997, the iconic classic was replaced by the New Beetle. This gave way to the third-generation Beetle in 2011.

The last Beetle production run will come with distinctive Final Edition trim. Light blue or beige in color, the cars hearken back to the Beetle Última Edición. Produced in Mexico in 2003, these were the last first-generation Beetles ever produced.

For those who love the classic compact Volkswagen, there is a glimmer of hope. The head of the VW Group of America has hinted that the new electric-car platform, set to debut in 2020 with the I.D. hatchback, may support a new Beetle model in the future as well.
