College Enrollment Figures Continue to Rise, Retention Rates Flounder

A new study has found that more high school graduates are attending college than ever before. However, 20 percent of these students leave school before they complete their degrees.

According to the Department of Education, the rate of high school graduates who immediately enroll in a higher education program has risen from 63 percent in 2000 to 70 percent today. The retention rate, which is the number of full-time freshmen who return for their sophomore year, has seen negligible improvement, or in the case of private, for-profit colleges and universities, has slightly decreased since 2011.

In response, colleges have doubled their recruiting efforts and provided students with degree-oriented resources such as Degree Works, a website that informs students of the requirements they have satisfied for their degree and what work remains. Specialized resources include Personal Achievement Through Help (PATH), which works exclusively with black male students.

For those living or working in New York City, the fire department (FDNY) should be notified immediately upon discovery of a fire, although, if small enough, the fire can be contained with the help of a portable fire extinguisher. The FDNY regulates the type and placement of portable extinguishers in buildings, as well as how many are needed, and the types vary by location. Portable fire extinguishers can be purchased at various hardware stores, but if you’re a New Yorker, to ensure you’re getting the extinguisher that meets your specific needs, it’s best to buy one from an FDNY-approved servicing company.

Dr. Felix Matos Rodríguez Named New CUNY Chancellor

Longtime educator Alex Ramadanis has earned two master’s degrees from Touro College in New York City. For nearly two decades, Alex Ramadanis has taught as an adjunct professor at Queens College, a member of the City University of New York (CUNY) system.

Culminating a year-long search for a new chancellor after the resignation of James Milliken, CUNY selected Queens College president Dr. Felix Matos Rodriguez to take the position. Before he joined Queens College in 2014, Dr. Matos Rodriguez was the president of Eugenio María de Hostos Community College, another school in the CUNY system.

During the tenure of Dr. Matos Rodriguez, retention rates at Hostos Community College skyrocketed, and Queens College was recognized as a leader in the promotion of economic mobility among its students from low-income backgrounds.

In his new role as Chancellor, Dr. Matos Rodriguez will oversee more than a dozen higher learning institutions that serve a diverse population of over a quarter of a million students.

Training Opportunities for Volunteer Firefighters

An experienced educator based in New York, Alex Ramadanis is an adjunct professor at Queens College, where he teaches courses related to special education. Alex Ramadanis also serves as a volunteer firefighter for the Nyack Fire Department, which serves several municipalities in Rockland County, New York.

The Nyack Fire Department consists entirely of volunteer firefighters who give their time and talent to the community by investing in fire prevention, public education, and fire services. The department is affiliated with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), which provides representation, education, and training to the state’s 110,000 volunteer firefighters.

FASNY provides many training opportunities for volunteer firefighters. By training volunteer staff members in contemporary tactics and approaches, FASNY helps volunteer departments remain strong.

Departments can choose to engage in several training programs. The online OSHA refresher course is a convenient way to complete the annual OSHA safety training. Various seminars, taught by nationally known industry leaders, cover topics such as structures, leadership, construction, and recruitment.

FASNY also offers a boot camp designed to help volunteer firefighters sharpen their existing skills. The camp covers topics such as forcible entry, firefighter bailout, and roof ventilation.
